What Actually Happens in a 1-Hour NDIS Consultation? A Friendly Walkthrough

By Jenny Mathers | Support Coordinator, Author & Disability Advocate

At a Glance: A Consultation is a Conversation, Not a Test

  • Zero Pressure & No Jargon: You don’t need a perfect folder, complex goals, or the “right words.” You don’t have to prove you are “disabled enough.”
  • Sensory-Friendly & Flexible: Meetings occur at our calm Toowoomba home office, by phone, or online video. Support workers, family, or advocates are always welcome.
  • What We Cover: Your real-world goals, plain-English plan translation, and addressing the worries that are stressing you out most.
  • Dedicated Attention: Caseloads are strictly capped at 20 participants so you receive genuine, unhurried support.

Are You Worried a Consultation Will Feel Like an Interview You’re Destined to Fail?

It won’t.

You don’t need the perfect words, a neatly organized folder, or a detailed five-year plan. You don’t need to arrive knowing how every part of the NDIS works.

A one-hour consultation with Steady Guide is simply a conversation. It’s an opportunity for me to understand where you are, explain what I can offer, and help us both work out whether we’re the right fit. No pressure, no judgment, and no pretending that navigating disability funding is simple when it isn’t.

🌿 Welcomed As You Are: A Sensory-Friendly & Neuroaffirming Space

Your consultation can happen at my sensory-friendly Toowoomba home office, over the phone, or via online video—whichever environment feels safest and most comfortable for you.

Our sensory-friendly Toowoomba home office space—designed for comfort, privacy, and calm conversations.

I operate using trauma-informed and neuroaffirming principles, meaning you remain in full control of the conversation:

  • Taking a slower pace if you need more time to process information.
  • Adjusting lighting, seating options, or allowing space to move/pace if needed.
  • Offering breaks whenever the discussion becomes tiring.
  • Communicating clearly in plain English rather than relying on bureaucratic jargon.
  • Respecting your communication preferences without making assumptions.

☕ You are always welcome to bring a family member, carer, support worker, or advocate. The first few minutes are simple: introductions, a cup of tea, and a clear breakdown of how we’ll spend the hour.

Structure of the Hour

What We Will Talk About

There isn’t a strict script because your life isn’t a checklist. However, we will usually explore three core areas together:

1. Your Real-World Goals

We focus on what you want your life to look like—not just a list of services. Your goals don’t need to sound polished or official. Statements like:

“I want to stop feeling like everything is falling apart.”
“I want to leave the house without overwhelming anxiety.”
“I need help understanding what my plan actually pays for.”

These are all completely valid starting points. Together, we turn these worries into clear, actionable priorities.

2. Your NDIS Plan (In Plain English)

If you have your current plan available, we can review it together. As an unregistered provider, I can work with participants whose plans are Self-Managed or Plan-Managed.

We will translate formal funding language into everyday English—breaking down Core vs. Capacity Building budgets, identifying allocated support coordination hours, and clarifying what can be organized first.

3. Your Worries & Frustrations

This part matters deeply. You might be exhausted from repeating your story, frustrated by long waitlists, or worried that your funding isn’t being used correctly.

You don’t need to tidy up your situation to deserve support. I listen first, and then we separate what is urgent, what can wait, and what options exist.

Preparation: What You Do (and Don’t) Need to Bring

❌ What You DON’T Need

  • A perfect folder of documents.
  • A pre-prepared speech or formal presentation.
  • Knowledge of every provider in Toowoomba.
  • An immediate decision on ongoing services.

✅ Optional Helpful Extras

  • Your current NDIS plan copy (if available).
  • Recent assessments or reports.
  • A list of current providers or questions.
  • Just yourself and your phone!
Choice & Control

A Two-Way Evaluation: What to Ask & Red Flags to Watch

A consultation isn’t a one-way lecture. You have every right to interview me and evaluate whether Steady Guide fits your needs.

💬 Great Questions You Can Ask Us

  • How do we communicate and how often will we meet?
  • How do you help me build my own capacity over time?
  • What happens if I’m unhappy with a service provider?
  • How do you manage conflicts of interest and participant privacy?

⚠️ Provider Red Flags to Avoid

  • Pressuring you to sign a service agreement on the spot.
  • Promising funding outcomes they cannot control.
  • Insisting you use their preferred partner companies.
  • Treating your budget as more important than your goals.

You Should Leave Feeling Clearer, Not Smaller

At the end of the hour, I will summarize our conversation, highlight immediate priorities, and outline options for next steps. You will never be pressured to make a decision on the spot.

A single consultation won’t magically solve every NDIS issue in 60 minutes, but it should ensure you feel less alone, fully heard, and clear about your available paths forward.
